Making Things Right


I know it's not the star of this photo, but the baklava at The Kabob House is to die for! It's delightfully nutty and chewy with a crisp phyllo dough, but it's not overly sweet.

Have you ever had an instance where you couldn't stop thinking about a certain food? I have to admit that I am still thinking about my first meal from The Kabob House in Richland, WA more than 36 hours after first ordering it. It was that good.

The Tri-Cities is growing so rapidly that it can be hard to keep up with the new businesses, and more importantly, the new restaurants, that keep popping up. I probably would have never considered The Kabob House, which is located at the corner of Queensgate and Duportail in South Richland. The first time you go there, you will know it by its modest yellow sign, but the second time you go there (trust me, there will be a second time), you will know it by its delicious cuisine! I will forever be grateful to a friend of mine for sharing a story of her first experience there with her fiance.

They had gone to The Kabob House around the time it had first opened, and as expected, the place was busy and the owners were still ironing out a few kinks. The servers lost their order. What could have been an awful experience actually turned into the reason why I wanted to try this place out. Not only did the owners admit their mistake, but they also covered the cost of the meal. In short, they made it right.

This is what separates a subpar restaurant from the best restaurants in the area. Service makes the dining experience so much more enjoyable, and the people at The Kabob House know that.

The dolmeh was yummy way to start off my meal. If you like citrus flavor, you will love these grape leaf wrapped treats!

On my first trip, the place wasn't busy at all as I was there for a late takeout lunch. Not only did the man at the counter greet me as soon as I entered, but he also told me about some of the most popular dishes. After hearing his descriptions, I wanted one of everything, but I settled on the lamb souvlaki, dolmeh, and baklava.

As I waited for my order, it looked like one of the employees was training another one. I was impressed by how patient she was, and she ended her instruction with "And if you ever need anything or have any questions, just ask. Everyone helps everyone here." That really made me smile. I know food service isn't easy, and I have had my share of seeing coworkers fight in restaurants, so it was encouraging to see just that small act of kindness. It made me feel good about spending my money here. (And that comment wasn't just an act - the employees really did work together!)

The lamb souvlaki comes with rice and a Greek salad. The meat is well seasoned, tender, and juicy while the rice was a perfect vehicle for the lamb.

I left the restaurant feeling excited about my takeout order. As I dished up at home, a dollop of the tzatziki sauce got onto my finger. As soon as I tasted it, I knew I was in for a treat, and I was not disappointed. 15/10 I would come here again!

Thank you, Kabob House, for making me remember that sometimes the best restaurants are the ones tucked in the corner of a busy shopping center. Thank you for sharing your culture through cuisine. Most importantly, thank you for reminding me that it's never a bad time to make things right. I can't wait to see you again!
